Contemporary Theatre of Dallas presents Clare Boothe Luce’s 1936 classic The Women, a comedy epic featuring an all-female cast of 19 playing more than 40 different characters. This masterpiece of rapid-fire wit, social insight and dazzling period fashion is directed by Susan Sargeant, recently honored for her directing work with a Dallas-Fort Worth Theater Critics Forum Award, and just named “Best Stage Director” in the Dallas Observer’s 25th Anniversary “Best of Dallas” issue. ![]() Morgana Shaw as Sylvia, Lisa Fairchild as Mary and Sarah Zashin as Little Mary |

Mary Haines (Lisa Fairchild, recently seen in The Dinner Party at CTD), a happy and prosperous Manhattan wife, mother and socialite, has always held herself apart from the sometimes vicious gossip of her friends, who include conniving Sylvia (Morgana Shaw), ever-pregnant Edith (Brandi Andrade), Broadway star Miriam (Producing Artistic Director Sue Loncar), wry novelist Nancy (Marisa Diotalevi), and relatively poor Peggy (Allison Rogers). But when Mary’s husband has an affair with a grasping shopgirl, Crystal (Kristen Blevins James), word gets to Mary, and against the advice of her wise mother (Carolyn Wickwire), Mary confronts the interloper, with disastrous consequences for herself and her daughter Little Mary (Sarah Zashin). Will Mary find her way back from a Reno “divorce camp” to the security she once knew? Do her friends really have her best interests at heart? Is “Jungle Red” the real color of sisterhood? This 1936 Broadway hit was made into a popular movie of the same name in 1939 and into the musical film The Opposite Sex in 1956. It had an award-winning Broadway revival in 2001, and a new screen adaptation directed by Murphy Brown creator Diane English is in pre-production. |
